The International Sampler Cookbook
One of Rae and Angie’s favorites as kids! We spent many an afternoon standing over the “Fry Daddy” covered in powdered sugar.
Ingredients:
- 1 pkg dry yeast
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 4 cups sifted flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 Tbsp shortening
- 1 1/4 cup milk, scalded then cooled (see French Bread recipe for scalding directions)
- Oil for deep frying
- Powdered sugar for dusting
Dissolve yeast in warm water in cup. Combine dry ingredients in a bowl. Cut in shortening until crumbly. Add yeast and milk; mix well. Knead 15 to 20 times on floured surface. Let stand for 10 minutes. Roll 1/4 inch thick. Cut as desired. Deep fry in hot oil until crisp. Dust with powdered sugar. May be dipped in honey or warm chocolate sauce!
