Mom & Dad

And first there were two…

Dad and I first met at a Halloween party at Weier School. Blue Grass Valley School was invited. I don’t remember what grades we were in.

I went to St. Francis High School in Little Falls, MN my freshman year. Then Dad and I were both in Ridgeway High.

Our first date, he and Joe Weber stopped at our home on a Saturday night to ask me to go to a movie. We didn’t have a telephone so he couldn’t call first. He had to wait for me to get ready and off we went, the beginning of our life together. Our main form of entertainment was movies. I think we saw every one that came to town! We did try to go roller skating at the rink in Ridgeway, but I couldn’t stay up and the manager kept trying to help me, leaving Dad on his own, so that didn’t work out. Joe was a regular companion on our dates. Sometimes he had a date and sometimes not!

We dated for over 3 years. We had a short period when we decided to take a break and date other people, but I guess we were just meant to be together.

We married on Thanksgiving Day, 1961. I can still remember, no one was moving fast enough for me that morning. The ceremony and reception are just a fuzzy memory. I remember the meal at Hideaway Acres and the dance at Club 18.

We went to Minnesota on our honeymoon. We stopped to see Sister Helen. Then headed for Regina and Bill’s to return her veil, which I wore. Even way back then we had to hurry back for Dad’s job! Mainly because we needed the money. We used our wedding money for our trip.

I was hoping to be June Cleaver and just be a homemaker, but soon reality set in and I knew I had to work to make ends meet.

I became pregnant soon after and all I did was go to work, then come home and sleep. Poor Dad!

We lived in Waukesha and Dad worked in Wales. I was so homesick and made Dad’s life miserable until he moved us back home to farm for John McGraw. From there we went to Grandma Weier’s farm, the bought the Weber farm, where we raised our wonderful family!

To be continued…
